Abantu Mu Buntu

Creative Connections’ 2008-9 International Young Performer’s Tour

The award winning Ugandan Children’s Music Troupe

Ugandan School Performances

Twelve gifted 10 – 18 year old Ugandan performers present spellbinding tribal dances, songs, music, and folktales from their home in East Africa.

Abantu Mu Buntu’s colorful costumes, beautiful voices and vibrant dancing transport audiences to their traditional homelands of Uganda, a land rich in culture and spirit. Audiences will not only enjoy watching these amazing young performers, but will also have the opportunity to sing and dance with them.

The company is led by master choreographer and teacher Frank Katoola. The founder of the Tender Talents Theatre Company - an umbrella organization for children’s theater work in Uganda, Frank has led children’s theatre and music tours throughout Uganda and other parts of the world, including Germany and the United States. This is the group’s third tour with Creative Connections. In addition, his groups have participated in the East Africa’s Winners Festival and Ligen, Germany’s International Theatre Festival of Children.

Abantu Mu Buntu’s will be touring New York City, Fairfield, and Westchester counties from October 27-November 14, 2008.

"Gazing on those gorgeous faces with those brilliant smiles….. Wow! I think they made us feel (all of us, young and old) the joy and aliveness and connection that everyone, on some level, yearns for." (Libby Bauer, Rye Country Day School)

School Performances
Ugandan School Performances

To meet the needs of different age groups, there are elementary, middle, and high school versions of the program.

Performances run between 50 and 60 minutes.

The program can be performed on stage or in a gym. The minimal technical requirements will be sent to schools with the booking contract.

Besides being entertained, we want our school audiences to get an insider’s feel for the culture of the performers. Thus each performance includes:

  • An "Up Close and Personal" video which takes students "back home" to see the schools, homes, and rehearsals of the performers.
  • Numbers where students interact with the performers by singing and/or dancing together.
  • A question and answer segment between the young performers and students (time permitting).
  • Your booking also includes one of more "Hands-on" and "feet-on" dance and drumming workshops for interested students.
  • In-classroom visits where students and performers can explore cultural similarities and differences (or other ideas) with one another.

Booking Details (full school day or half day)

Full day bookings afford your students the opportunity to really get to know the Ugandans. The schedule can include a combination of two full performances, workshops, classroom visits, and eating lunch with students.
Fee: $4000

Half-day bookings can include a full performance and your choice of one other activity (a workshop or a classroom visit).
Fee: $2500

Priority is given to schools requesting full day bookings. All available spaces are usually filled well before the start of the tour. Contact us as soon as possible for more info or to reserve a date.
